SECONDHAND SMOKE                 "There's no safe exposure

                                                                                                 to secondhand smoke."

With growing evidence of the health risks associated with secondhand smoke exposure, it is important to establish smoke-free environments both indoor and outdoor. Smoke-free environments are the only effective approach that protects nonsmokers from the dangers of secondhand smoke because there is no safe level of exposure.

WHAT IS SECONDHAND SMOKE?

Secondhand smoke is the sidestream smoke from the burning end of a cigarette, pipe or cigar as well as the smoke exhaled by the smoker.

Secondhand smoke contains many of the same chemicals that are present in smoke inhaled directly by the smoker. There are over 4,000 chemical compounds in tobacco smoke.

The EPA has designated secondhand smoke as a known human carcinogen.

HOW CAN I PROTECT MY FAMILY?

Ask a health educator how you can pledge to keep your car and home smoke free. Kits are available at the health department, (801) 399-7184.
